The Karayuna Learning Centre
The Karayuna Learning Centre provides support for students on long suspension who have been Identified by their school as likely to benefit from our structured program. The Karayuna Learning Centre aims to assist schools in their capacity to manage students with disruptive behaviours.
The Karayuna Learning Centre initiative has the capacity to strengthen the partnership between parents/carers and schools. It is especially important in building parent recognition of their responsibility for taking an active role in modifying the inappropriate behaviour of their child. Therefore for the intervention to be successful a collaborative approach will be adopted involving the home school, the parents, the student and the centre.
The Karayuna Learning Centre is situated on the grounds of Drummond Memorial Public School in Armidale NSW, and is
accessed via the Ohio Street entrance.
The Program
The Karayuna Learning Centre offers a structuredand supportive environment in which students develop skills to help them re-engage in their home school.
The program will:
- Assist students to reflect on and understand their behaviour and its consequences and
develop a positive attitude towards schooling.
- Develop the student’s capacity and understanding to re-engage at school and minimize the recurrence of inappropriate behaviours.
- Provide support for parents/carers.
There will also be time allocated each day for students to participate in the “social and behavioural ” sessions which will explore themes around:
- Taking responsibility for our actions
- Identifying solutions to problems.
